Technology · Chapter 01
The structure that made air obsolete.
SMART, Shape Memory Alloy Radial Technology, carries load, absorbs shock, and returns energy without a single pound of air pressure.

FIG. 01 · SMA RADIAL STRUCTURE
How it works
Load. Deform. Recover. A million times over.
01
Under load
The radial structure meets the road and compresses with the comfort of a pneumatic tire.
02
Under impact
Nitinol deforms far beyond what steel could survive — absorbing the impact instead of failing.
03
Instant recovery
The alloy springs back to its original shape, cycle after cycle, with no pressure ever to lose.

The material · Nitinol
A metal that flexes like rubber and remembers its shape.
Nickel-titanium (Nitinol) is superelastic: it can bend, twist, and absorb enormous strain, then snap back without permanent deformation. It remembers its shape, every time. It is the functional role of air, delivered by a material instead.

For the curious The science of Nitinol How a metal flexes like rubber, in five short explanations. +
NICKELTITANIUM
01 · Composition
Two common metals, one precise ratio.
Nitinol is nickel and titanium in nearly equal numbers of atoms, named for its makeup and birthplace: the Naval Ordnance Laboratory, where it was discovered in the early 1960s. The atoms settle into an ordered cubic lattice; small adjustments to ratio and heat treatment set the temperature range where it behaves superelastically.
LOADUNLOADAUSTENITEcubic, at restMARTENSITEsheared, under load
02 · Mechanism
It changes its crystal structure instead of breaking.
Most metals bend by letting planes of atoms slip past one another, and that slip is permanent. Nitinol has another option. Under load its cubic lattice, austenite, shears into martensite without breaking a single bond. Remove the load and the lattice shifts back, and the part returns to its original shape.
STEEL YIELDSLOADING PLATEAUUNLOADING PLATEAUSTRAIN →STRESS
03 · Behavior
Superelasticity: large strain, fully recovered.
Spring steel recovers about half a percent of strain before it bends for good. Nitinol recovers up to about 10%, roughly 20 to 30 times more. On a stress–strain curve this shows as two flat plateaus, one loading and one unloading; the area between them is energy absorbed, which damps impact and vibration.
Shape memory and superelasticity are the same transformation, triggered two ways: by heat for shape memory, by load for superelasticity. The SMART structure is tuned to work superelastically.

04 · In the tire
Why it can do the job of air.
Air carries load at a nearly constant pressure: the tire flattens where it meets the road, conforms, and pushes back evenly. Nitinol's plateau does the same thing mechanically, holding a nearly constant force across a wide range of deflection on every rotation. Nothing to leak, puncture or reinflate, and the alloy resists fatigue well enough to be trusted in stents that flex with every heartbeat.
22TiTITANIUM28NiNICKEL 17 RARE-EARTH ELEMENTS · NONE USED
05 · Supply
Abundant metals. No rare earths.
Titanium is the ninth most abundant element in Earth's crust; nickel is mined on six continents. Neither is a rare earth. Nitinol is already made at industrial scale for medical and aerospace parts, and both metals are routinely recycled.

Two SMART airless bicycle tires, backlit, showing shape memory alloy coils through amber and green translucent sidewalls
Look inside · Smart design
Hold it up to the light.
Sunlight passes through the translucent sidewalls and reveals the shape memory alloy coils that carry the load. The tire is hollow but holds no pressurized air, so there's nothing to leak out. Sidewalls come in different colors; the black custom tread is retreadable. The first of its kind, and patented.
The approach
Everyone else replaced air with more material. We replaced it with the right one.
Traditional airless
Polymer and foam packed where air used to be. Heavy, low energy return, a rough ride, and still limited in the loads they can carry.
SMART
A shape memory alloy that recreates how air behaves under load — matching the weight and ride feel of a pneumatic tire so closely a rider can't tell the difference. Same feel. None of the failure modes.
Interplanetary Design
Engineered for Mars. Commercialized for Earth and the Moon.
Developed within NASA's Mars rover program to carry load over terrain and temperature extremes where air-filled tires can't survive. SMART Tire is commercializing that same structure for Earth, and for the next generation of lunar mobility. The relationship with Glenn Research Center continues today.
